Vélo Indien d'un Autre Type - Another Type of Indian Bicycle: Rickshaw

After the regular Indian Bicycle posted yesterday, here is an example of Rickshaw Wallah, available everywhere in the city for short distance only.

Hi LouLou, I think the rickshaw's a great way to get around. It's certainly better for the environment. And it's still connected to all that is going on in the surrounding environment-though it could be a bit hot.<3

Looks to be in very good condition, well maintained... I wonder how much money a rickshaw rider manages to make in a day... enough to feed a family ? How far is a "short" distance? Delhi is a pretty vast city, no ? Do they stay within certain quarters or something like that ? Must be hard work when it is 45°C outside though ! And when it rains, do they keep working ?

We should have these Paris... would make less pollution than taxis... :-)

What big contrast in this small world we live in. Beautiful picture.

Ciao Loulou !... A bientôt !...8:)

Ofcourse a less polluting Auto but the driver must be really having a tough time paddling it out in the traffic. Nice capture!

@ Cynthia: there are many initiatives of this kind in Europe. One of them started in 2003 (http://www.cyclopolitain.com/Paris2.html), and that's really nice. Those are using electric system... when in India, as you can imagine, there is NO electric support........

@ Owen: still, some have no age, and certainly because they spend lots of energy to maintain them in good conditions. In terms of salary, first, they RENT the rickshaw between 20 to 30 rupees, and can get around 100 to 150 rupees per day. (100 rupees = 1,4 euros in March 2009).
Delhi is more than huge. Around 17 million of inhabitants.... and yes, they stay within certain district and make short distance only.

@ Alvaro: Welcome to India, the world of contrasts.

@ The watercats: you won't regret the experience!

@ Nathalie, merci, merci et merci ! A Avignon aussi ? c'est chouette ! ça change vraiment le paysage urbain. On attend les photos à présent :-)

@ Kcalpesh: tough is an euphemism...
